ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH EQUITHRIVE PRODUCT USE?
There are no known side effects associated with use of Equithrive® Joint or Metabarol®. Equithrive Joint has been on the market since 2009 and has been proven to improve soundness and overall health in horses in multiple scientific studies. Metabarol has been on the market since 2012 and is the only product demonstrated to reduce insulin levels in horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome, which are insulin resistant (IR) and prone to foundering.
ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS WITH EQUITHRIVE PRODUCTS AND OTHER MEDICATIONS?
There are no known contraindications with use of Equithrive Joint or Metabarol. Equithrive products are very commonly used as a combination therapy with anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal), viscosupplements (injectable and oral) and regenerative therapies (Stem Cells, PRP, iRAP, etc.). Metabarol is sometimes used in combination with Pergolide to manage horses that are suffering from both PPID/Cushing’s and insulin resistance (IR). Metabarol is not a treatment for PPID/Cushing’s. However, it can reduce insulin levels in PPID horses that are insulin resistant, which is a major risk factor for foundering.
CAN EQUITHRIVE PRODUCTS BE USED IN PREGNANT OR LACTATING MARES?
Formal safety studies have not been conducted on Equithrive Joint or Metabarol in pregnant or lactating mares. Equithrive Joint and Metabarol have been used successfully in pregnant and lactating mares. Metabarol is sometimes used to improve mare fertility and to support a healthy pregnancy and birth. High insulin levels and chronic inflammation are common in mares and can lead to reduced fertility or to foal abortion, particularly in the third trimester. Horse owners should contact their veterinarian to determine if mare infertility may be due to insulin resistance (IR), which can be diagnosed via an Oral Sugar Test.
IF MY HORSE HAS EMS ISSUES AND ARTHRITIS, SHOULD I GIVE METACARBOL OR EQUITHRIVE JOINT OR BOTH?
If you have a horse with both EMS and arthritis, you only need to give the horse Metabarol. The high dose of resveratrol in Metabarol will provide metabolic support, as well as reduce inflammation to promote soundness.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO SEE RESULTS IN MY HORSE?
Horse owners generally report improvement with 2-3 weeks of use of Equithrive Joint and with 3-4 weeks of use of Metabarol. Research studies have indicated that inflammation and oxidative stress are significantly reduced in horses after 14 days of Equithrive Joint administration. Daily Metabarol administration for 45 days resulted in significant reduction in insulin levels in horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS).
IS EQUITHRIVE REALLY THE ONLY CLINICALLY PROVEN JOINT SUPPLEMENT?
A limited number of other joint supplements have undergone some research trials. However, Equithrive Joint is the first equine joint supplement that has been proven to reduce lameness in a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are the type of rigorous studies that are required by the FDA for approval of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, because they reduce the likelihood that a product is approved for use without it providing a significant health benefit.
MY HORSE IS RETIRED AND NOT A PERFORMANCE HORSE—IS EQUITHRIVE JOINT A GOOD CHOICE FOR HIM?
Retired horses can definitely benefit from Equithrive Joint. Inflammation has been demonstrated to increase in horses over their entire lifetime. Increasing inflammation with age is largely responsible for the health decline that is typical with aging. Equithrive Joint has been proven to reduce chronic inflammation in aged and lame horses. Low to moderate inflammation promotes healthy aging in horses.
WILL EQUITHRIVE PRODUCTS WORK ON PONIES JUST AS WELL AS HORSES?
Equithrive Joint and Metabarol benefit ponies in the same way that they benefit horses. In fact, ponies are extremely susceptible to Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and corresponding foundering. Therefore, Metabarol is an extremely useful therapy in supporting the health and wellness of ponies and breeds such as Arabians, Paso Finos, Saddlebreds, Walking Horses and Draft Horses that also are genetically predisposed to developing EMS.
DO I NEED A PRESCRIPTION FROM MY VETERINARIAN?
Neither Equithrive Joint nor Metabarol require a prescription from your veterinarian. However, Equithrive Joint is routinely recommended by veterinarians subsequent to lameness exams and Metabarol is frequently recommended by veterinarians after a horse has been determined to have insulin dysregulation or insulin resistance (IR), particularly in horses that have foundered. Therefore, you may first hear about Equithrive Joint or Metabarol from your veterinarian, as many veterinarians are aware of the scientific research that has been conducted on our products.
DO I NEED TO FEED THE PRODUCT WITH GRAIN OR CAN I JUST FEED WITH HAY? DOES IT MATTER HOW MUCH GRAIN?
Equithrive Joint can be administered with grain or hay. It is advisable to administer Metabarol with hay or other feed sources that have low nonstructural carbohydrate content. If Metabarol must be given with grain, limit the grain ration to as small of an amount as possible.
SHOULD I GIVE THE FULL DOSE AT ONCE OR SPLIT IT UP MORNING AND AFTERNOON—WHAT WORKS BEST?
If possible, it is best to split the daily dose between an AM and PM ration. This helps ensure that blood levels of resveratrol and its metabolites are more consistent in your horse over time.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF I STOP FEEDING MY HORSE EQUITHRIVE PRODUCTS? WILL THE RESULTS REMAIN OR DO I NEED TO KEEP GIVING IT AS LONG AS I WANT THE RESULTS?
Equithrive Joint and Metabarol should both be administered daily for consistent results. Early research indicates that 30 days of resveratrol administration causes a prolonged anti-inflammatory effect in horses that can last for 1-2 months after administration of the product has been stopped. However, after the residual resveratrol effect wears off over time, inflammation levels will return to higher levels as they were before administration of the product.
